BackThe Cambridge National Certificate in Child Development covers all aspects of child development and parental responsibility, from conception to five years. Students develop the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to create the best conditions for a child’s development and well-being.
This course is for those who wish to develop applied knowledge and practical skills in child development. It is designed with both practical and theoretical elements, which will prepare students for further qualifications in Child Care, Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology and Biology.

Course Outline
Unit 1 Health and well-being for child development (examined unit)
You will learn the essential knowledge and understanding for child development, covering reproduction, parental responsibility, antenatal care, birth, postnatal checks, care, conditions for development, childhood illnesses and child safety.
Unit 2 Understand the equipment and nutritional needs of children from one to five years (Assignment)
You will gain knowledge of the equipment needs of babies and young children and an understanding of the factors to be considered when choosing appropriate equipment to meet all of these needs. You will also gain knowledge of nutrition and hygiene practices and will be given the opportunity to evaluate dietary choices.
Unit 3 Understand the development of a child from one to five years (Assignment)
You will gain knowledge of, and skills in, developing activities to observe development norms in children up to the age of five. This unit will include researching, planning, carrying out activities with children and observing and reviewing these activities, as well as an understanding of the development norms and the
benefits of play in child development.

Assessment
Unit 1:
External exam written paper lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes. The exam consists of two sections, comprising short answer and extended response questions. Contributes to 40% of final grade.
Unit 2 & 3
Internally assessed assignments which will be externally moderated by OCR.
Both contribute to 60% of final grade.
Students will receive grades ranging from a Level 1 Pass to a Level 2 Distinction.
Career Progression
This course is ideal for anyone interested in studying about the development and support provided for young children. It can lead to students progressing into A Levels or onto Level 3 vocational courses such as Health and Social Care. The practical research and planning skills developed will help you succeed at Level 3 courses.
