NBS Science & Faith Symposium - Carlo Acutis, Jeans, Science & Miracles
Back
On Monday 20th April, Nicholas Breakspear School was fortunate enough to be able to have two wonderful speakers come to our Science and Faith Symposium, entitled Carlo Acutis - Jeans, Science and Miracles.
This symposium focused on supernatural miracles and how it relates to science. Our first speaker was Professor Vincenzo Tamma, Founding Director of the Quantum Science and Technology Hub who has a Ph.D. in Physics and Applied Physics. During his talk, he spoke about quantum physics and what it entails and linked it to Transubstantiation and how science complements it, rather than opposes it.
Our next speaker was Jacquie Stacey, a Carlo Acutis UK Apostolate, who spoke to us about St Carlo and his mission, specifically his documentation of the Eucharistic Miracles. On that topic, she told us the story of the Eucharistic Miracle of Buenos Aires, where real-life flesh was found among the consecrated host and when tested, the blood sampled matched other samples from the cloths that Jesus was wrapped in after his crucifixion and the cloth which Veronica used to wipe his face. Furthermore, when the DNA was tested, only one X chromosome from the mother was found as opposed to one X chromosome from the mother and a Y chromosome from the father.
After the talks from our speakers, there was an opportunity for adoration, a peaceful time of reflection, worship and prayer. Then a relic from Assisi that contained strands of St Carlo’s hair was venerated, a very special moment.
After some drinks and nibbles, we were given an opportunity to write prayers that Jacquie would be taking to Assisi to be placed under the tomb of St Carlo. There was then an opportunity for a Q&A session where Professor Tamma and Jacquie graciously answered the questions of those attending.
Overall, this Symposium was very eye-opening and helped us learn more about miracles that occur within our Catholic Community and how Science links to them.
